L\u00e0-bas, j\u2019ai rencontr\u00e9 Bruno Viana et son \u00e9quipe, des chimistes passionn\u00e9s par l\u2019\u00e9laboration de cristaux utilis\u00e9s dans les sources laser, ces m\u00eames sources que j\u2019ai explor\u00e9es dans mes pr\u00e9c\u00e9dentes s\u00e9ries photographiques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bien avant leur utilisation finale, ces cristaux sont d\u2019abord con\u00e7us et \u00e9tudi\u00e9s ici, en laboratoire. Ce sont les briques \u00e9l\u00e9mentaires sur lesquelles repose la fabrication des sources lumineuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pour illustrer ses propos, Bruno m\u2019a tendu un objet fascinant : un cylindre de quelques centim\u00e8tres, d\u2019un rouge profond presque pourpre. Sous une lumi\u00e8re ultraviolette, le cristal s\u2019est anim\u00e9 de reflets \u00e9clatants, comme si le rouge incandescent fusionnait avec l\u2019UV dans un ballet de lumi\u00e8re. \u00c0 l\u2019une des extr\u00e9mit\u00e9s, une fine pointe jaillissait, se fondant peu \u00e0 peu dans le reste de la mati\u00e8re. J\u2019ai captur\u00e9 cette beaut\u00e9 \u00e9trange sous plusieurs angles avant de s\u00e9lectionner les clich\u00e9s les plus \u00e9vocateurs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ce cristal, m\u2019expliqua Bruno, appartient \u00e0 la famille des corindons. C\u2019est un rubis, rendu rouge par l\u2019ajout d\u2019ions chrome dans une matrice d\u2019alumine. Ces cristaux, tr\u00e8s durs \u2014 seuls les diamants peuvent les rayer \u2014 sont utilis\u00e9s dans l\u2019industrie comme abrasifs, ou encore pour fabriquer des verres de montres r\u00e9sistants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Il poursuivit en d\u00e9crivant l\u2019agencement du cristal : des ions d\u2019aluminium et d\u2019oxyg\u00e8ne rang\u00e9s avec une extr\u00eame pr\u00e9cision \u00e0 l\u2019int\u00e9rieur de petites structures appel\u00e9es mailles. Ces mailles se r\u00e9p\u00e8tent \u00e0 l\u2019identique dans tout le cristal, \u00e0 la mani\u00e8re d\u2019un motif de carrelage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pour former un cristal de cette taille, on part d\u2019une graine \u2014 un petit cristal initial \u2014 que l\u2019on plonge dans un bain fondu contenant les ions n\u00e9cessaires. En se solidifiant lentement, ce bain reproduit la maille \u00e9l\u00e9mentaire, cr\u00e9ant un r\u00e9seau cristallin qui s\u2019\u00e9tend jusqu\u2019\u00e0 former la pi\u00e8ce finale.
