Je l\u2019observai attentivement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Son contour \u00e9tait d\u00e9poli et granuleux. \u00c0 l\u2019inverse, ses deux extr\u00e9mit\u00e9s \u00e9taient relativement transparentes. Je pouvais regarder \u00e0 travers ce long cylindre de verre. Quelques irr\u00e9gularit\u00e9s parsemaient la surface, semblables \u00e0 des craquelures al\u00e9atoires, comme des d\u00e9chirures hasardeuses. Elles \u00e9voquaient, sans vraiment les imiter, l\u2019aspect laiteux des galaxies lointaines. Cette face \u00e9corch\u00e9e attira mon attention, et dans l\u2019obscurit\u00e9, je m\u2019appliquai \u00e0 en faire ressortir toute l\u2019\u00e9tranget\u00e9. Une lumi\u00e8re plac\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019arri\u00e8re venait se diffuser sur les fissures de la face oppos\u00e9e. Plus je l\u2019\u00e9clairais, plus le contraste de ces filaments insolites se r\u00e9v\u00e9lait. Lorsque la lumi\u00e8re est absorb\u00e9e par le n\u00e9odyme, une partie de son \u00e9nergie se dissipe sous forme de chaleur dans le verre, entra\u00eenant une rapide mont\u00e9e en temp\u00e9rature. Pour des impulsions dont on souhaite accro\u00eetre fortement l\u2019\u00e9nergie, cet \u00e9chauffement devient critique\u202f: sans pr\u00e9caution, le barreau de verre dop\u00e9 pourrait se briser. C\u2019est pourquoi ces barreaux sont refroidis \u00e0 l\u2019eau, afin d\u2019\u00e9vacuer efficacement la chaleur. Or, les verres employ\u00e9s ont tendance \u00e0 s\u2019oxyder au contact de l\u2019eau, formant alors ces myst\u00e9rieuses craquelures que j\u2019avais captur\u00e9es en image. Loin d\u2019\u00eatre issues du hasard, ces filaments d\u00e9sordonn\u00e9s s\u2019expliquaient en r\u00e9alit\u00e9 par cette n\u00e9cessit\u00e9 technique de refroidissement, indispensable \u00e0 la production d\u2019impulsions lumineuses de haute \u00e9nergie.
